FIRSTLIGHT
Point Cartwright, Sunshine Coast, Australia
Every journey begins with a first step. For me, my journey into astrophotography began beneath the stars at Point Cartwright Lighthouse on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
That evening, I set out with my camera, tripod and a newly downloaded app called Stellarium. Having spent time researching how to photograph the Milky Way, I was eager to put what i had learned into practice. There was a mixture of excitement, anticipation and uncertainty. It was my first attempt at photographing the night sky, and I had little idea what to expect.
My original plan was to capture the Milky Way rising above Point Cartwright Lighthouse. However, the tide made my intended composition inaccessible, forcing me to explore the opposite side of the headland and find a position along the beach.
After setting up my tripod beneath the stars, I noticed a torchlight approaching through the darkness. What initially caught me by surprise turned into one of the most memorable moments of the evening. The light belonged to a fellow astrophotographer who had ventured out with the same intention of capturing the night sky.
We introduced ourselves, shared stories and began photographing the Milky Way together. As someone attempting astrophotography for the very first time, having an experienced photographer offer advice, encouragement and practical guidance was invaluable.
As the evening unfolded, my initial nerves gradually gave way to a growing fascination with the extraordinary detail hidden within the night sky.
The photograph you see here is the result of that very first adventure.
While my knowledge and techniques have continued to develop since that evening, Firstlight will always hold a special place in my collection. It represents far more than my first photograph of the Milky Way. It captures the excitement of discovering something new, the kindness of a stranger and the beginning of a passion that would become an important part of Ben Jones Studio.
Firstlight is where my journey into astrophotography began.
